Can testosterone levels be increased by exercise

In men there is a temporary increase in testosterone levels after exercise. In women and teenagers the results of tests are much more variable.

Studies have shown that weight training exercises by men can increase serum testosterone levels by up to 40%. However, this increase is only temporary and serum testosterone levels drop back within a few hours of completing the exercise. Similar exercise with weights by women and teenage boys and girls did not significantly increase serum testosterone levels.

The type of exercise may be important in how testosterone levels respond. Studies on treadmill exercise have shown that while men have increased serum testosterone levels within half an hour of starting exercise, women show no significant increase until two hours later. Further, it has been suggested that swimming as an exercise actually results in a temporary reduction in serum testosterone levels for both men and women.

It seems that overall, short term exercise will temporarily increase serum testosterone levels in men. Prolonged endurance type exercise may also promote testosterone increases in both men and women, but these levels return to normal or may even decrease below normal during or shortly after finishing the exercise. These brief increases in testosterone concentration with short term exercise are unlikely to have a significant effect on pattern baldness.
