Can
naturally produced DHEA cause accelerated pattern baldness in men
Possibly. There is some research that suggests increased levels
of DHEAS in the body are associated with more extensive pattern
baldness beginning at a young age.
Some scientists in hair research are interested in naturally produced
DHEA. As part of the scientists' research, DHEA-S levels in the
blood of men who have pattern baldness was monitored. Research suggests
that some men with early onset, extensive pattern baldness have
particularly high levels of DHEA-S in their blood. In one study
it was shown that men aged 18 to 32 with pattern baldness had DHEA-S
blood levels between 340 and 730 micrograms per deciliter. In comparison,
a similar group of men with no pattern baldness had blood levels
between 124 and 330 micrograms per deciliter. Yet both groups had
similar concentrations of testosterone in their blood.
This would seem to indicate that high levels of DHEAS in the blood
is closely associated with pattern alopecia. If this is the case,
high levels of naturally produced DHEAS, or adding more DHEAS to
the blood through dietary supplements, may increase the chances
of pattern alopecia hair loss.
