Are
men with pattern alopecia physically more masculine
There is a widely held belief that men with extensive pattern alopecia
develop the condition because they have high androgen levels. In
turn, high androgen levels are believed to increase muscle mass,
body hair, and many other physical attributes. However, studies
show that there is no link between the extent of androgenetic alopecia
and other physical attributes such as body hair density as shown
by Burton. There is also no apparent association between extent
of hair loss and the rate of androgen hormone production.
The perceived association between extent of hair loss and masculinity
is primarily a morale boosting statement for men losing their hair.
