Norwood's
Caucasian male pattern baldness epidemiology study
Most studies on the frequency of pattern baldness do not define
the extent of hair loss in relation to age. These studies are only
useful for defining the degree of pattern baldness in the general
population but nothing more. A few published studies have looked
at the extent of hair loss in relation to age. Hamilton's original
study is most frequently quoted in dermatology textbooks but the
results are biased as Hamilton had very few men over the age of
50 in his population sample.
The most extensive published study into the frequency of male pattern
baldness with relation to hair loss extent and age was conducted
by Norwood. Norwood wrote a hair transplant book with a set of tables
showing the frequency of hair loss in 1000 men compiled into different
age groups and its pattern according to his own classification.
The original tables have been made into graphs below with the first
graph summarizing the frequency of each hair loss category for all
1000 men.
