Why
does my hair only fall out during certain weeks of my monthly cycle
Androgenetic alopecia onset in women can be due to a variety of
causal factors, but these factors always involve hormone levels
and their receptors in hair follicles. The onset of pattern baldness
may be promoted by androgen hormones binding to androgen receptors
in the hair follicles, but overall androgen potency must be considered
against the background of non androgen hormone levels in women.
Having regular cyclical increases in hair loss may occur for some
women. Several hormones have a significant role to play in hair
growth. Estrogen can be a direct promoter of hair growth. In contrast,
progesterone does not have much direct effect. Estrogen is also
an indirect inhibitor of androgen production whereas progesterone
can aid androgen activity. Androgenetic alopecia in some women may
be particularly sensitive to changes in homone levels during their
monthly cycle. Low estrogen and high progesterone levels may coincide
with increased hair shedding.
