What are the side effects of azelaic acid

Potential side effects include a reduction in skin pigmentation and some people are hypersensitive to the product developing rashes and dermatitis.

The main adverse effect appears to be transient itching/stinging that around 80% of patients seem to get when using this drug for acne. This symptom may last from a couple of minutes to a half hour after application of azelaic acid. Dermatologists claim 10% of people discontinue usage because of this.

A few individuals develop marked blotchy hypopigmentation while using Azelaic acid. This is a particular problem for individuals with darker skin and those with exposure to sunlight. Dermatologists may recommend sun and ultra violet light avoidance when using azelaic acid.
