What are the potential side effects of estrogen treatment

Side effects of oral or injected estrogen use include;

Dizziness, headache, and migraine. Mental depression. Spasms of limb and facial muscles. Steepening of the eyes' corneal curvature and subsequent intolerance to contact lenses.

Abdominal cramps, nausea, and bloating. Vomiting. Convulsions. Cholestatic jaundice. Elevated blood pressure. Fluid retention. Glucose intolerance. Increased serum calcium level. Increased sensitivity to light.

Blotchy skin pigmentation. Localized skin irritation. Loss of scalp hair (!). Increase of body hair. Red skin patches from capillary congestion.

Very rare side effects include; blood clotting disorders, and liver tumors.

There are several topical preparations available through the internet and other outlets that inculde estrogen. Some of these preparations have been found to penetrate and act systemically promoting precocious puberty and other side effects in young children and some adults. However, other studies using topical estrogens on adult men have shown no obvious side effects.
