I
have just started using propecia / minoxidil / a hair loss treatment,
but my hair loss had increased dramatically. why has my hair shedding
increased
Any treatment that stimulates hair growth will intially cause some
shedding. Hair follicles cannot go from making a thin hair fiber
to making a thick hair fiber in mid stream. They have to stop making
a thin fiber, enter a resting state, and then quickly turn around
and start producing a new, thicker hair fiber.
It is not unusual to have some temporary shedding when intially
using minoxidil or Propecia (or any thing else that affects hair
growth). The shedding should only last a month or two after which
the hair follicles should be back to producing new hair again. It
may be three to four months before the hair recovers to its original
state as the new hair fibers must grow through the skin and out.
Hair only grows at most 0.3mm a day.
If hair shedding persists beyond three months then you may be having
an adverse reaction to the drug - or it is just not working for
you. Minoxidil and propecia do not work for everyone and some people's
hair loss persists. You should consult with your dermatologist if
the shedding persists.
