Studies with 2% minoxidil

There are numerous published studies on the use of 2% topical minoxidil for patern baldness. The references listed below are by no means all the studies published. The studies conducted for, and submitted to, the FDA to gain approval for minoxidil as a pattern baldness treatment involved counting the number and type of hairs present witrhin a specified area of scalp skin.

Volunteers in the trials had a small tatoo applied to their scalps to identify a site for repeated photography throughout the clinical drug trial. The photos were used to count the number of vellus and non-vellus hairs. The results showed a significant increase in non-vellus hair growth and a corresponding reduction in vellus hair numbers for those using minoxidil. A summary table of the hair counts is shown below.
after 4 months of

Similar studies were conducted on women as shown.

As well as conducting hair counts the studies also involved taking photogrpahs of the scalp. These photos were then evaluated for degrees of hair growth by comparing the photos taken during the study with photos taken before the study started. There were four categories for for hair regrowth.

   1. None: No visible regrowth.
   2. Minimal: Barely discernible regrowth.
   3. Moderate: Readily discernible regrowth.
   4. Dense: Full regrowth similar to non-thinning areas.

Clinical studies at 27 US medical centers involving over 2,300 patients concluded that minoxidil increases hair growth in both men and women.
