What are the side effects of tretinoin

Tretinoin is a retinoid, that is a vitamin A derivative. As such, it can have very potent effects when used in a highly concentrated form. Oral use is the most powerful method of application and people on oral tretinoin are carefully monitored. High dose oral vitamin A is toxic! Oral use is only a last resort in the treatment of severe, scarring acne. Potential side effects include affecting skin pigmentation, skin peeling, and increasing susceptibility to sunburn. It is often used in conjunction with a sunscreen to protect from UV rays and it is only applied at night. Topical tretinoin use has similar but more limited side effects involving hypersensitivity and photosensitivity.
