Can
saw palmetto reduce fertility
Studies have not been done on saw palmetto to define side effects
when used in treatment of androgenetic alopecia. However, considering
saw palmetto has similar properties to propecia it may well have
similar side effects.
Saw palmetto has been used in one study to look at potential effects
on egg fertilization by sperm. Hamster eggs and sprem were incubated
in solutions of echinacea purpura, ginkgo biloba, St. John's wort
(Hypericum perforatum) and saw palmetto. saw palmetto did not affect
the fertilization of eggs. In contrast, St. John's wort resulted
in zero sprem penetration of eggs and high concentrations of echinacea
and ginkgo also resulted in reduced oocyte penetration. St John's
Wort was actually found to be mutagenic for sperm cells!
