Grooved
hair
Hey dude! Do you have groovy hair? Grooved hair has one or more
grooves running for part or all of the hair fiber length. The hair
fiber is structurally sound and strong with a normal cuticle. With
just one groove the hair has a quarter moon cross section shape.
With two grooves it may have an hour glass cross section shape,
and with three or more grooves the cross section is more star shaped.
A few grooved fibers can be found in almost all individuals with
healthy hair. However, an increased number of grooved hairs are
found in such conditions as trichothiodystrophy, pili torti, woolly
hair, uncombable hair syndrome, argininosuccinase deficiency, and
ectodermal dysplasias. There is no treatment for grooved hair. Given
the hair fiber generally maintains its strength, grooved hair is
little cause for concern unless it is a diagnostic marker for another
hair defect disease.
