Pseudo
pili annulati
Pseudo pili annulati looks like the real thing and can be seen
as light and dark bands along the length of hair fibers. However,
the banding pattern is not due to any internal defect of the hair.
Pseudo pili annulati is seen in hair that are flat in cross section
and twisted at regular intervals. The flat surfaces facing the person
looking at the hair reflect light while the twisted part reflects
the light away from the observer and hence looks dark. The light
has to hit the hair fiber from a certain angle for the banding to
be apparent otherwise the bands cannot always be seen. Pseudo pili
annulati is most obvious in people with blond hair. It can present
as natural highlights in limited areas on the scalp. The hair is
strong and healthy and there is no known treatment.
