Cancer induced hypertrichosis

Hypertrichosis can sometimes be promoted by malignant tumors. Sometimes internal cancers will promote systemic hypertrichosis but more frequently localized hypertrichosis can be observed in the skin immediately above a tumor. Usually the hair produced is unpigmented lanugo hair and so cancer induced hypertrichosis is often described as "acquired hypertrichosis lanuginosa". In some instances cancer induced hypertrichosis has been called "malignant down".

How cancers promote hair growth is not known, but most likely the rapidly proliferating tumor cells are producing many cytokine chemical signals that promote cell growth. This promotes the development of the tumor but can also promote other proliferating cells. The hair follicles are the most active proliferating, non-cancerous cells in the body and so they may be affected by the stimulatory cytokines. In addition, many tumors promote angiogenesis, that is the infiltration of the tumor by blood vessels. This increases nutrient supply to the tumor. Any adjacent normal skin tissue may also benefit from the increased blood supply and increased hair follicle activity may be the result.
