Hairy
elbow hypertrichosis
Hairy elbows syndrome (HES, or sometimes called "hypertrichosis
cubiti") was first described by Beighton in 1970. Hairy elbows
represents an uncommon variety of localized hypertrichosis that
is not associated with any significant medical problems. This hypertrichosis
occurs in young children and may be visible from 4 months of age.
It occurs sporadically in different people although there may genetic
involvement for some as the trait has been observed in several individuals
of the same families.
Ten cases of hairy elbow have been reported since Beighton's original
case. Unexplained short stature unrelated to any specific dysmorphic
syndrome was observed in 7 cases, but otherwise the affected individuals
were normal. Hairy elbows could be considered a mark of short stature,
but this association might be overestimated given there are so few
published cases.
