Fine
hair and how to handle it
Naturally fine hair cannot be changed permanently as it is a genetically
inherited characteristic, but there are cosmetic procedures that
can be used to give it more body.
One method of increasing the body of fine hair is by the hair style.
A medium to short, blunt cut style help s to increase body. Contrary
to intuition, a long hair style does not give more body and can
make fine hair actually look thinner. Long hair has more weight
to it than short hair. The weight makes the fine hair hang limp.
On the top of the scalp this can make a parting look more prominent.
A short hair style has less weight to it so the hair is more "bouncy"
and has more volume. It hides fine or thin hair better.
A permanent wave is another way to increase the volume of fine
hair. The applied chemicals make the hair swell up. As the biochemical
bonds inside the hair are reformed during the neutralizing stage
of a permanent wave process, some of the increased volume produced
by the wave chemicals will be fixed in place along with the wave.
This increased volume does not wash out, but of course new hair
growth will be fine so if you want to maintain the increased volume
you will have to have a wave process done at regular intervals.
There are shampoos and conditioners available that impart increased
volume. Usually they contain some form of protein. At the moment
the hot thing is a hair thickening shampoo that has keratin in it.
However, keratin containing shampoos and conditioners do not do
a better or worse job than other products containing more traditional
thickening agents like serum. Any kind of protein will do. The protein
binds to the hair fiber to give it a coating and so make the hair
thicker. This is a temporary fix. Your next shampoo will wash off
most of the thickening agent so you need to reapply the product
regularly.
