Cosmetics
induced effluvium
Some chemicals used in hair products can be quite damaging to
hair fiber and hair follicle activity. While limited use may promote
hair
shaft defects, chronic overuse may also cause a combination
of telogen and anagen effluvium. Diffuse hair loss may develop
after persistent use of products that contain hydrogen peroxide
or thioglycolates. These chemicals are typically used to dye hair,
set styles, or straighten curly hair.
Inappropriate application or use of concentrated chemicals in
hair dyes, perms, and hair straighteners can also cause chemical
burns in some circumstances. This may result in permanent, irreversible
scarring alopecia.
